  • Typical Daily Activities

At First Step (or as the kids say “June and David’s”) we take pride in the diverse range of activities that we have during the day, all within a basic schedule:

7:30-8:15 Arrival time (books, floor and table top activities)
8:15-8:30 Clean up and wash hands
8:30-8:45 Circle time (sharing time, weather report, etc.)
8:45-9:00 Breakfast
9:00-11:15 Group activities (outside or inside free play, field trips, art activity, etc.)
11:15-11:45 Storytime
11:45-12:00 Bathroom or diapers and wash hands
12:00-12:45 Lunch
12:45-1:00 Transition to naptime (Books, music)
1:00-3:15 Quiet or naptime
3:15-3:30 Up from nap, diapers or bathroom, wash hands
3:30-4:00 Afternoon snack
4:00-5:30 Open ended activities (outside play if possible) until pick up

This schedule reflects a typical day at First Step Day Care.  Flexibility within a structure is what we strive for.  The children know the general routine and count on daily events such as circle time, meal times, story time and nap time.  What we do before and after these times varies widely and adds spice to our lives!

A few of the activities that the children and adults (parents too!) enjoy include:

  •  Dancing with Stephanie
  • Gardening in our community garden just down the street
  • Trips to storytime at the Ann Arbor District Library
  • Walks around the block and to local parks
  • Painting, drawing, gluing, cutting, building just for fun or a special project!

We encourage parents and other family members to join us in activities whenever they can.  Some of the field trips that parents really like include:

  • Our trips to the Toledo Zoo
  • Trips to the pumpkin patch in the fall
  • Apple-picking at the apple orchard

These are just some of the activities that the children and adults thoroughly enjoy. There are lots of other things that we do during the day to help the children develop in many different ways, but mostly we provide materials and a little guidance and let the kids lead the way!
